What to do about Hair Loss
Two of the causes of male pattern hair loss are genetics and DHT. Hair loss can be inherited. And it can be inherited through either the male or female line, contrary to what was previously thought. DHT is a chemical in the scalp that causes the hair follicle to become smaller and the hair to become thinner. It’s a progressive process that causes the hair follicles to become increasingly thinner and more delicate until eventually a bald spot occurs.
50% of men experience some hair loss by the age of 50. This loss begins in the twenties or thirties and since hair loss is progressive, the sooner you begin treatment to prevent it, the more hair you can save. If you think you are experiencing hair loss, have a conversation with your doctor as soon as possible, because there is something you can do to prevent further hair loss and even to re-grow hair.
Propecia is a once-a-day pill approved by the Food and Drug Administration and available by prescription. In a five-year clinical study, Propecia was proven to have helped men retain and even re-grow their hair.
In the study, 48% of men from the ages of 18 to 41 with mild to moderate male pattern hair loss experienced hair re-growth. And the new hair was natural, healthy hair, not just “peach fuzz.” 42% of the men retained the hair they had, while the group on placebos continued to lose hair. It was also noted that Propecia improved the overall appearance of the men’s hair. Propecia stimulates hair growth mid-scalp and on the top of the head. Its ability to re-grow or retain hair at the hairline or temples has not been established yet. Propecia is for the prevention of hair loss in men and should not be used by women or children. |
